Benefits of Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

Artificial Intelligence (AI), also referred to as machine intelligence, has revolutionized various fields. Machines have been able to perform many difficult tasks with much ease. The areas of usage of artificial intelligence have been growing at a rapid pace. Agriculture is one of the areas which have been transformed by the usage of AI. Right from the sowing of seeds to the harvesting of crops, all processes related to the increase in crop yield have been made more efficient through the use of machine intelligence.

While sowing the seeds, techniques like “variable rate planting” are being used to make sure that the condition of soil is favorable to ensure the highest quality yield. Robots are being used for harvesting the crops, which has significantly made it easier for countries to deal with the shortage of labor. Machine vision and sensor fusion techniques have made it easier for farmers to select the best produce from the entire harvest. These techniques are being extensively used in food processing as well.

Usage of drones with precision sensors is now becoming a common practice to locate any hampered crops, unwanted growth, pest control etc. The “see and spray” model that helps to curb the menace of pests in the fields has been very effective. Certain mathematical algorithms which can help us predict and enhance the yield are being utilized to lessen the burden on farmers. The ease with which information regarding all these techniques is available is also a major factor why these practices have become more common in most parts of the world.

Through AI, the process of farming has become much easier which has led to lesser risks and wastage of resources. The quality of food consumed by the consumer has got much better due the strict quality checks carried out through the machines. In future, the changing weather and increasing population are going to be huge challenges, particularly for the farmers. However AI is capable enough to reduce their impact as well.
